2011-2012 Season Wrap-UP
The MAMS Girls' Basketball Team finished the regular season with a 13-3 record, good for 2nd place in league play. Four 8th graders finished a terrific three-year career at MAMS. They are Tracey Brereton, Jennelle Long, Jackie Robinson & Mary Tomkins. All four players were starters this year, and will truly be missed here at MAMS. These student-athletes were not only talented, but dedicated, reliable and hard-working as well. Three players were nominated to the league all-star selections, Brereton, Long & Robinson. Only two players were permitted to actually represent a school at the all-star game and Tracey Brereton & Jennelle Long were our two representatives at Thorne MS on February 28th and they made us proud @ the All-Star Game.
The four previously mentioned 8th graders accounted for 534 of our total points this season. We were optimistic about the possibility of finishing our season with a couple of more wins, but an elbow injury sidelined Tracey Brereton for two games and we really missed her as she is one of our best all-around players. Tracey can handle the ball, shoot from inside and out and she gets her share of rebounds for us. She was also our pick to defend outstanding opponents when we needed someone to cover a team's strongest player. Jennelle Long has been our point-guard for two seasons and this year showed herself to be one of the best long-range shooters in the league. She was invaluable as our playmaker and came up with key steals on defense all season long. She will be hard to replace as our floor leader. Jackie Robinson, despite not being as tall as our opponents, covered the inside for us both on offense and defense. Her athleticism makes up for what she lacks in height, and she also stood out on defense with her hustle and determination. Mary Tomkins was steady in her role as one of our starters. Mary's height and great attitude made her an invaluable member of our squad. She never failed to come up with a key rebound or basket at crucial times. Mary did a great job for us. Another outstanding contribution these four 8th graders made over the three seasons I've known them was in their free-throw ability. All four players made shots when we really needed them, and probably had one of the top percentages in the league in this category....girls or boys!!! ;)
Our fifth starter was 7th grader Rose Egan. Rose was a solid player from our off-guard position. She came up with steals and key plays on defense and we'll be looking for her to take over the point-guard position next season. Our 7th graders were Bethany Kurdi, Alexis Espada and Jess Veary. Veary was our 6th girl off the bench and filled in nicely when Tracey Brereton was out with an injury. We'll be looking for Jess to be a key player next year. Rounding out the team were 6th graders Catherine Brown, Gianna Capatasto, Megan Groh, Marissa Hona, Aniyah Moore, Cate Toomey and Brianna Urbanski. These young players brought alot of potential and enthusiasm to our program. We will be looking for them to be a big part of future success.
Special honors were acknowledged at our end of season awards night. Tracey Brereton and Jennelle Long were selected to the league all-star team for the 2011-12 season. Jackie Robinson was nominated as well, but since only two players were allowed to represent a school at the game, we named Jackie the Maroon & Steel recipient. Mary Tomkins was awarded the "Coach's Award" for her participation, team spirit and great attitude for three years.
The Matawan Avenue Girls' Middle School Team finished 2nd in the final league standings for the 2nd year in a row.
2010- 2011 Season Wrap-up
The MAMS Girls' Basketball Team finished the regular season with an 11-5 record and tied for 2nd place in their league. Four 8th graders completed their final season for the middle school, Colleen Branagan, Hannah Nappi, Maria Provenzano and Endila Radoncic. The versatile Branagan started in 14 games for the Lady Huskies and scored a total of 85 points before an ankle injury sidelined her for the last three regular season games. Maria Provenzano added 46 total points and started in every game for us this season. She was also one of the leading rebounders and was a true leader among her teammates. Hannah Nappi was instrumental in her role coming off the bench in many games and transitioned nicely into a starting spot when injuries plagued the team. Endila Radoncic was a newcomer to the Lady Huskie program and made great progress over the course of the season. All four girls will be greatly missed for not only their basketball skills, but for their enthusiasm and dedication to our program.
7th graders and starters Tracey Brereton, Jennelle Long and Jackie Robinson accounted for 319 total points this season with Brereton leading the team with 145 individual points. Long was invaluable at the point-guard position and showed coolness under pressure in many situations this season including two game-winning free-throws in the final seconds of our last home game. Robinson handled both scoring and rebounding duties before a knee injury cut her season short. She was the second-leading scorer on the team. Sharing the sixth-player role with Nappi was 7th grader Mary Tomkins. Mary was valuable because she can handle many roles on the floor.
Rounding out the team were 7th graders Shana-Lee McCormack and X'Andria Scott, and 6th graders Rose Egan, Jessica Veary, Bethany Kurdi and Danielle Guillen. "Lefty Rose" Egan logged some playing time among the starters and should be a key player over the next couple of years.
The Lady Huskies participated in the 32nd Annual Run for the Roses Tournament during the post season, but their stay was short-lived as they were defeated in the opening round by Manasquan 24-18 making their final record 11-6.
PREVIOUS RESULTS.......
MAMS GIRLS 9-3
Brereton Records a personal best!
Despite suffering two more losses, the Lady Huskies from MAMS recorded three more wins in the last two weeks to bring their record to 9 wins and 3 losses. The losses came at the hands of Hazlet, 31-27 and Colts Neck, 24-16. Tracey Brereton led the scoring for Matawan against Hazlet with 12 points, followed by Jackie Robinson with 8 points. Colleen Branagan tallied 5 points in the loss. We also ran into foul trouble with Branagan and Robinson fouling out in the final minutes. At Colts Neck, we couldn't buy a basket and despite a great defensive effort, the Lady Huskies came up short 24-16. On a positive note, our girls had one of their best outings as far as shot selection goes, but we couldn't sink them....even missed some easy layups. We look forward to meeting them again on a bigger floor with friendlier rims!!!
Our wins came against Holmdel, Bayshore and Long Branch. In the Bayshore win, Tracey Brereton recorded a personal best 21 points in leading us to a 36-11 win. In the Holmdel win, Jennelle Long (8 pts.), Maria Provenzano (6 pts.), Jackie Robinson (6pts.) and Colleen Branagan (5 pts.) led the way with our their usual team effort. In the Long Branch win Brereton led the way again with 12 points, while Branagan contributed 10 points. The Lady Huskies came up with many steals and loose balls and built a solid lead from the start enabling us to get some of our hardworking players like Hannah Nappi, Mary Tomkins, Endila Radoncic and Shana-Lee McCormack some extra playing time.
Previous Results........
The Lady Huskies recorded three more wins in the last two weeks, but suffered their first loss to a strong Thompson Team from Middletown. The wins came against Neptune (37-24), Long Branch (39-23) and Thorne of Middletown (36-31) bringing their record to 6-1 after seeing each team in the league.
The stomach virus visited our team in the last few weeks and unfortunately we weren't at full strength for the Thompson game; however no excuses.......we simply got beat by a talented team and we'll be ready for round two with them on Feb. 15th.
On a brighter note, once again a balanced attack proved to be our strength in capturing wins number 4, 5 & 6. At Neptune, Jennelle Long had the hot hand both from the floor and the free-throw line contributing 9 points. Tracey Brereton also had a great shooting night leading the team with 11 points. Jackie Robinson was as reliable as ever scoring 9 points and Colleen Branagan and Maria Provenzano combined for 8 points to round out the scoring.
In the Long Branch contest, it was another team effort led by Branagan and Long with 10 points each. Jackie Robinson followed with 9 points, Tracey Brereton, 6 points, and Maria Provenzano, 4 points. Hannah Nappi and Mary Tomkins gave us some help off the bench as we put together our highest point total thus far with 39 points for the game.
Thompson proved to be our toughest opponent so far this season holding us to a season low 18 points. Not much more to say about this game except that we were grateful that Jackie Robinson was able to give us some time in the game, even though she wasn't feeling well....You're a tough player Jackie!!
We got back on the winning track @ Thorne MS on Monday the 24th, in what I thought was one of our best played games of the season. Our press gave them fits as we jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first few minutes of the game. Strong defense, especially the tough box and one defense the girls displayed in the second half secured the win. I will be sounding like a broken record, but once again it was a total team effort and one of the things we really got together in the second half was our ability to make great passes on the break and make our layups!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great job girls!!!!
Led by a balanced attack, the MAMS Girls' Basketball Team defeated Holmdel by a score of 26-22 this past Tuesday, Jan. 11th.
Colleen Branagan, Tracey Brereton and Jackie Robinson each contributed eight points in the victory. Once again,Maria Provenzano and Robinson were tough on the boards despite Holmdel's height advantage. Jenelle Long had another solid game from the point guard position.
I couldn't ask for more out of these five starters on the floor and our support on the bench in these close games is so team-oriented that I couldn't be more proud of these girls.
Special mention goes to Mary Tomkins and Hannah Nappi for leading our less experienced players. We've lost some key practice days over the holiday break and now this past week and so the progress of our younger players has been affected by these circumstances. Watch for Rose Egan, Jessica Veary, Endila Radoncic, Danielle Guillen, X'Andria Scott, Bethany Kurdi and Shana-Lee McCormack throughout the season to take their games to another level....they're working hard!
Tracey Brereton led the scoring for us in our first victory against Bayshore with 15 points, but it was a solid team effort with every player contributing. Colleen Branagan had 8 pts. followed by Jennelle Long with 6 pts, Jackie Robinson 5 pts. and Maria Provenzano with 2 pts. Jackie and Maria did a great job on the boards and reserves Hannah Nappi, Mary Tomkins, Rose Egan, Jessica Veary, Endila Radoncic, Danielle Guillen and X'Andria Scott contributed as well. The final score was Matawan 36 and Bayshore 13.
On Thursday, Hazlet came to Matawan, and it was a close game the whole way. In the final few minutes our girls dug deep and came up with some key rebounds and loose balls....but, more importantly we made clutch free throws in the last quarter...12 of them!!!!! Jackie Robinson and Maria Provenzano were tough on the boards and Jackie led the team with 15 pts. Colleen Branagan had 8 pts., Tracey Brereton, 6 pts, and Jennelle Long and Provenzano each had 2 pts. Brereton and Branagan also had key steals throughout the game as the Huskies put the game away in the final minutes winning 32-23. Before starting the 4th quarter I told the girls they had 6 minutes to show me what they were made of........so now I know! I was very proud of our team, on the floor and on the bench.
Thanks to all the parents for your support! Look for pictures on the website... coming soon courtesy of Mrs. Branagan!
