• Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to Eighth Grade English Language Arts! ELA covers reading, writing, language, speaking, and listening skills. Through rigorous academic units, students will learn skills for both reading and writing in the following areas:

    • Narrative Fiction

    • Literary Analysis

    • Comparing Informational Texts

    • Argument/Research

    • Poetry

    • Drama

    •

The key aims of the Language Arts course are geared toward having students:

    • Become better writers through the utilization of the writing process: prewriting/planning, writing/drafting, evaluating/revising, proofreading/editing, and publishing.

    • Engage in a variety of writing purposes including creative, analytic, and argumentative, in addition to writing using research.

    • Reinforce grammar and language structure skills to become proficient in speaking and writing Standard American English.

    • Become better speakers through whole class and small group discussion, informal debate, and formal speeches.

A list of supplies required for my class is listed on my webpage. My homework, classroom procedures/schedule, and grading policy are all listed on my webpage as well. You will also find “Homework Updates” on my webpage, where you will be able to check homework requirements on top of checking the agenda.

Studies show that parental involvement in a child’s education strongly impacts student achievement.  I encourage parents to ask what their child is learning in class. I also hope both parents and students will make it a priority this year to attend as many school events as possible. Go HUSKIES! : )

If you have any questions or concerns or if you would like to schedule a conference, you can contact me at ecrawford@marsd.org. The best times to reach me are during school hours.

Once again, welcome to 8th grade! I can’t wait to work together to make this a productive year for all! I can’t wait to get the year started! I also look forward to meeting many parents at conferences.

    Sincerely,
    Emily Crawford
