    School year 2021-2022

    Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to 7th grade ELA! My name is Elysia Altiero and this is my 7th year teaching. I am very excited to get this school year started and on its way!

I’d like to introduce myself both personally and professionally.  I am originally from Freehold. After graduating from Kean University with a B.S. in Criminal Justice, I began dispatching for 911. After 12 years, I graduated from Georgian Court University with a M.A. in Education and began my teaching career in 2012. I have worked in the Jackson, South Brunswick and Manalapan districts before making Matawan-Aberdeen my educational home.  I am married with two children, Emily and Charles who are both becoming avid piano players.

Your students are in charge of their own education. I am here to teach, facilitate, model and grow your students. But their successes are completely in their own hands. I won’t do their work for them and I will have high expectations for each and every one of my students. I am aware of their capabilities and their areas of weakness but that should not hold them back. With determination, hard work and good old fashioned “Can Do” attitude, your student will be successful this year.

You have a role to play! Communication is key to any relationship and the one between your student and you and I is no different! I will work hard to make our classroom as transparent as possible so there is no confusion once your student leaves school. I will post a google classroom that you will be invited to join. You will be able to see what we are working on in class and what students are expected to do. I can tell you right now that reading is a muscle that needs to be practiced every day. With that said, your student will be expected to read and log on independent reading. Check out this interesting graph on reading.

One last thing about communication is that it is two-way. I will be reaching out to you and your student as I introduce self-regulation. I will also reach out if your student has difficulty completing or keeping up with the workload.

I am super excited to be working with you and your student this year! I am committed to finding just the right balance of fun and learning to make this the best year!
