• NJSLA/NJGPA and ESL Accommodations

All ESL students in grades 3-12 are required to take the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) and NJ Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) test with the following exemption:

Exemption:  The only exception applies to ELLs who entered school in a U.S. state or Washington, D.C., as well as a language assistance program, after June 1 of the academic year in which the assessment will be administered. These students do not have to take the LAL portion of PARCC unless it is required to meet graduation requirements.  Newly arrived ELLs must take the math and science sections.  ELLs from Puerto Rico are eligible for this exemption.

Accommodations:  The chart details the available accommodations for ELLs while aligning them to different English Language Proficiency levels (ELP).

The ESL educator can apply his or her knowledge of language acquisition with familiarity with the individual student’s linguistic needs to recommend accommodations for NJSLA/NJGPA.
