• The ESL, English as a Second Language program, is an intensive English Language course.  The goal of the course is to teach limited English speaking (LEP) students and non-English speaking students to understand, speak, read and write the English language, so that they can function effectively in their classes and in American society.  In addition to teaching listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing of English, the curriculum incorporates the teaching of American culture and traditions.  The ESL program encourages students to share their native customs and traditions with each other and with in the school community.
    The ESL program is offered in grades K-12. The program is broken down by levels: Elementary K-3 (3 schools), 4-5 (1 school), Middle School 6-8 and  High School 9-12.  A certified ESL teacher instructs the students each day to learn to read, write and speak the English language. The district currently has five ESL teachers assigned to six schools.  The ESL teacher works with the regular classroom teacher to help students understand and work effectively in class and in society.  Students use technology weekly, working on activities to improve reading, writing, and speaking.  Students are also able to attend tutorial sessions to assist them with different academics, projects/programs they work on in school.  
    The program has new and returning students each year across the grade spans.  New students are identified at registration upon entering school and the information is communicated with the ESL teacher.  The teacher follows the district procedure for enrolling a new student and communicates this information in writing to parent/guardian.  A student's parent can refuse to receive services and must notify the school administration as soon as possible.  Students who continue in the program require parents/guardians to be notified each year until they are exited from it.  If and when a student is exited by multiple measures or parent request they continue to be monitored for a period of time.
