Game 1 -MRHS vs Holmdel - "Huskies open a can of Raid on the Hornets"Things were all right in Huskyville as Matawan JV Huskies started the season in a good way by defeating Holmdel 7-0. Brian Leibell got the opening day nod and came through with 6 effective innings pitched for the win. The Huskies only had 5 hits but smart baserunning and taking advantage of Hornet miscues helped the cause. Nick Santuccio and Corey Nusbaum each had 2 RBI. The Huskies played an errorless game in the field. The Huskies had 2 successful sac bunts.GAME BALL - Pitcher Brian LeibellGame 2 - MRHS at SJV - "It's a GREAT day to be a Husky"The JV Huskies defeated the Lancers 5 to 1. Another solid game in the field for Matawan as the Huskies only had 2 errors on one play. Defense was the key with several players laying out for great plays- Joe Garafalo, Joe Piscopo, and Sal Berretto all got their uniforms dirty for the sake of the team. Corey Nusbaum played a solid game in the field throwing out a big runner and Chris Veary scooping a few at first. Nick Santuccio pitched a stellar 7 innings scattering 3 hits while Joe Piscopo and Pat Depalo lead the offense with a combined 4 hits, 4 runs, and 5 stolen bases. The Huskies had 4 successful sac bunts.GAME BALL - Pitcher Nick SantuccioGame 3 - MRHS at Point Boro - "Sloppy but we'll take it"The Huskies took a while to get going but when they did, it all came together with 12 hits and a good combined pitching effort. Chris Veary came off the bench on a cold and windy day and delivered 2 key hits and an RBI. Justin Henderson played a solid 3rd base and collected 2 more hits and an RBI. Matt Rackett got the start and battled for 4 innings and then Joe Garafalo did a good job holding the Panthers quiet for another inning and then Pat "Mariano" Depalo came in and slammed the door shut with 5 strike outs over the last 6 batters. The Huskies sacrificed 3 times.GAME BALL - Pat Depalo gets the win, steals 2 bases and scored a runGame 4-MRHS vs Red Bank-"Huskies sink the Buccaneer's ship"Matawan JV improved to 4 and 0 with a 6-4 win over Red Bank Regional. Scott Thompson got the start and battled for over 4 innings holding Red Bank back long enough for Matawan to score a few runs. The story was Pat Depalo on offense with 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBI, and 4 stolen bases to lead the Huskies who compiled 11 hits. On defense, Corey Nusbaum threw out 3 runners attempting to swipe a bag, while Pat Depalo and Luke Adduccio threw out runners at home plate to seal the fate of the Buccaneers.GAME BALL - Pat Depalo and Corey NusbaumGame 5-MRHS at Freehold Boro- "All good things come to an end"The Huskies could not over come a careless and sloppy first inning allowing Boro to jump out to a 5-0 lead with 3 unearned runs against Nick Santuccio. The Huskies had their chances leaving the bases loaded three times. The bright spot was George Zirkel who came in and pitched 2 effective and scoreless innings.GAME BALL - George Zirkel for saving the bullpen armsGame 6-MRHS at Shore - "Win one for the Carno"While Coach was at his sister's wedding, the JV Huskies did their coach proud by dismantling Shore Regional 14-1. Brian Leibell loves the friendly confines of the Blue Devil home turf pitching a a solid 5 inning complete game, also hitting a grand slam and 5 RBI in the process. Joe Piscopo went 4 for 4 and Pat Depalo had 3 hits and 4 RBI. Luke Adduchio collected 2 more hits and the Huskies welcomed back Tyler Birch from the DL.GAME BALL - Brian Leibell- pitched win, GS, 5 RBIGame 7 -MRHS vs Rumson - "Husky bats growl & bark at the Bulldogs"JV Huskies stay hot as the game time temperature defeated the Bulldogs of Rumson 12-2. Corey Nusbaum was the hitting star of the day with 2 hits and 3 RBI when the Huskies needed him most. Nick Santuccio remains the rock of the Husky rotation with his 2nd win. Nicky battled through 5 innings of work giving the Husky bats enough time to awaken while driving in 2 RBI in the 8 run 5th inning for Matawan. Chris Veary continues to impress with 2 more hits and 2 runs scored. Matawan is now 6-1.GAME BALL - Corey Nusbaum - 2 hits, 2 RBIGame 8-MRHS vs Keyport - "Girkel flirts with perfection"Geroge Zirkel got a spot start and pitched 3 perfect innings - 9 up and 9 down on about 25 pitches. Zirkel, Sal Berretto, and Pat Depalo combined to no hit the Red Raiders over 5 innings. Chris Veary was rumblin' and stumblin' around the bases for his first HS TRIPLE!!! Tyler Birch had 2 hits and 2 RBI as did George Zirkel. The Husky offense went off for 19 runs helped by a few Keyport miscues. Fun Fun FUn had by all.....GAME BALL- George Zirkel- pulled out game with a no no in the works!GAME 9 MRHS at Raritan - "There's no TYING in baseball!!!"The Huskies were involved in a rarity, a baseball tie. Matawan came back from deficits of 3-0 and 5-3 to tie the game 5-5. Due to a Raritan player injury, the game was called by the umpires. Nick Santiccio stayed hot with a 2 RBI triple. George Zirkel hit a pinch hit 2 RBI double in the 5th to tie the game. The Huskies didnt play well, but good enough not to lose =tie... yuk... GAME BALL - George ZirkelGAME 10MRHS vs Manchester - "Pitching and Defense Wins Games"The JV Huskies continue to impress winning 5-3. Someone different everyday seems to make a contribution. Today George Zirkel pitched 4 quality innings followed by Pat Depaolo and then Nick Santuccio for the save. Santuccio is white hot at the plate with another his and 2 more RBI and performed the perfect 1st and 3rd walk off causing the Hawk pitcher to balk in the Huskies' 5th run. Joe Piscopo came in mid game to add and RBI, single and steal 2 bases, scoring the the 4th run. The Husky pitching was effective and the defense came up big when it counted.GAME BALL - Nick Santuccio - 2 RBI, pitched for a saveGAME 11MRHS at Holmdel "Mercy, Mercy Me......"The JV Huskies 10 runned a team for the 4th time this year. On chilly and windy day on hills on Holmdel, with the buzz of the parkway nearby, Matawan continues its hot streak beating Holmdel 14-4. Pat Depaolo had 3 hits, 3 SB, and 3 runs scored. Nick Santuccio also had 3 hits to lead the Husky offense. But ever ready in reserve, Pat Borrusso joined the hit parade with a single and RBI to put the Huskies up 10. Brian Leibell plodded through 5 innings keeping the Huskies on top until they could pull away for good. Matawan is now 9-1-1. GAME BALL - Pat DepaoloGAME 12MRHS vs SJV - " It's a WONDERFUL day to be a Husky"Matawan completed a rare 3 game sweep on all levels against the Lancers. The JV team won 5-3 in a well played game. Nick Santuccio kept the dangerous Lancer hitters guessing for the 2nd time this year going 6 and 2/3 innings for the win, and Pat Depaolo the ONE PITCH for the save. Joe Garafalo made a diving stop in the top of the 7th with men on base to get a force out at 2nd which proved to be the most important defense play of the day. Corey Nusbaum SAVED SEVERAL RUNS with his blocking behind the dish and threw out his 10th RUNNER OF THE SEASON. The Huskies did enough with the bats with their 17th sac bunt of the year and their 8th Sac Fly of the year, a true testament to TEAM PLAY, not worrying about individual statistics. Matawan is now 10-1-1, helping Coach C into his 140th win..... GAME BALL - Joe Garafalo - a diving stop and throw to 2nd with 2 men on in the 7th inning.GAME 13 -Matawan at Red Bank - "Capt. Girk leads the crew"The JV Huskies kept on rolling with a solid 10-0 win over the Buccaneers of Red Bank Regional. George Zirkel pitched hurled 5 strong shut out innings and collected 2 hits and 2 RBI. Matawan had another stellar day in the fielding department as their pitchers threw strike after strike. Nick Santuccio added on 2 more hits as he is officially on a "hot streak". Another happy bus ride home for the JV team.GAME BALL - George Zirkel- 5 shut out innings, 2 hitsGAME 14-Matawan at Barnegate- "Frodo saves the Ring"Nick Santuccio continues to impress as the ACE of the JV Husky staff. Nicky mowed em down for 6 innings and Pat "Mo Rivera" Depaolo added yet another save as he closed the door on Barnegate as the Huskies win 4-2. A balanced Husky offensive attack saw Cory Nusbaum with 2 RBI, Chris Veary with 2 RBI, and Nick Santuccio with 2 more hits. The Huskies stole 5 more bases and have not been caught yet this year.GAME BALL - Nick Santuccio - Winning Pitcher, 2 hitsGAME 15Shore at Matawan - "U-L-G-Y =we ain't got no alibi, it was ugly"The JV puppies eeked (sp?) out a 4-0 shut out of the Blue Devils of Shore Regional HS. George Zirkel continues to impress as a pitcher throwing another 4 scoreless innings. Pat Depaolo reaped the benifit throwing 3 innings at the end for the win. The Huskies offense was stale, but Justin Henderson shed some light he began to break out of his slump with 2 hards hits and a bomb that was caught in deep center. The Huskies stole 6 bases and produced runs on the base paths putting pressure on the Blue Devils. Joe Piscopo had an RBI single and Pat Depaolo hit an RBI double in the 5th as Huskies were held in check early. Cory Nusbaum threw out his 12 baserunner of the year and made several key blocks behind the plate to save runs. The Huskies are 13-1-1.GAME BALL - TEAM- it was a group effort to steal a win hereGAME 16 -Rumson at Matawan- "Rain, rain go away - Rumson too...."JV Matawan fought from behind all day. Down 1-0, 2-1, and 6-2 before the bats woke up late on a Saturday morning, winning 14-7. Justin Henderson had 2 more hits and 3 runs scored, Cory Nusbaum had a hit and 3 RBI, Geroge Zirkel had 2 hits, 2 SACS, and 3 RBI and Pat Depaolo had a single, double, and 3 RBI. Sal Berretto started the game and pitched 2 solid innings, Joe Garafalo pitched an inning to bridge the gap to Nick Santuccio who finished the last 4 innings shutting the Bulldogs down.GAME BALL- Justin Henderson got the offense in motionGAME 17 - Raritan at Matawan -"Huskies bats brought the thunder while playing in the rain"Matawan pounded out 12 hits and George Zirkel held down the fort on the mound going 4 effective innings. Pat Depaolo and Nick Santuccio dodged a bullet or 2 following Zirkel to seal the win. Chris Veary led the Husky offense with 3 hits, A STOLEN BASE, and 2 runs scored. Cory Nusbaum had a key 5 inning double and 2 more RBI, bringing his team leading total to 15 RBI, and Tyler Birch came alive with 3 hits and 3 RBI. The story again was timely hitting, good base running and errorless play in the field. Matawan is now 15-1-1.GAME BALL - Corey Nusbaum - 2 Big RBI, solid again behind plateMatawan defeats the Spotswood Chargers.2012 Season Recap2012 SEASON RECAP: The JV Huskies finished the season with a record of 16-2-1. This was the best JV record in recent history and the players were truly a pleasure to coach. The team batting average was .338 with an ERA 2.39. The Huskies only made 25 errors in 19 games which is an accomplishment in itself. Team Awards will be given out at the 1st Annual Baseball Banquet.Thank you Frodo, Larsen, Harry, Nusslepuff, Patty D, Patty B, Barracuda, Girk, Joe P, Fluke, Janine, and Maple for a great season.
