Dear Huskies:
It is an exciting and proud time to be a Husky! Our high school community continues to celebrate our well-deserved honor as one of America’s 2017 Best High Schools in US News and World Report! Additionally, Matawan Regional High School was ranked #55 by the 2017 Niche.com in an analysis of student life data from the U.S. Dept. of Education, along with test scores, college data and ratings from Niche users. Our school has continued to offer the most rigorous academic courses while providing opportunities for all students to excel in diverse areas of our curriculum. We are committed to enhancing our curriculum offerings, implementing innovative programs and fortifying our strong school community partnership.
Our dedicated and talented faculty continues to offer expanded course offerings and internship opportunities for all of our students of various interests and ability levels. The high school is offering a great opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in education as our Tomorrow Teachers Program is up and running. Our career academies continue to thrive as we continue to explore opportunities such as a Communications academy at our high school. Our student run radio station, the Husky Howl, along with our TV studio and digital media course offerings will serve as the foundation of a Husky Communications Academy. The high school team is also researching and planning for the implementation of an Early College High School program designed to provide students the opportunity to receive a high school diploma and an associate degree by taking a mixture of high school and college classes in a small class size learning environment.
Our high school community continues to enhance our academic instruction by offering supplemental and targeted instruction for our students in mathematics and language arts literacy. Our emphasis on literacy will be enhanced with the implementation of NewsELA for every student. This innovative tool provides students with high-interest, cross-curricular non-fiction texts to students right at their reading level. Students are engaged and teachers are focusing instruction on critical reading skills.
Our Husky athletic department is hosting a "Kick-off for the 17-18 Husky Athletic Season" on Wednesday, August 30th at 7pm in the cafeteria. This inaugural event will include an opportunity for parents and our student athletes to meet and greet all of our athletic coaches. The evening presentation will also include an NCAA Academic Eligibility Information session for the College Bound Student-Athlete. Samantha Hegmann, the Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance for Athletics at Monmouth University, will be the keynote speaker. Refreshments will be served! Additionally, our Freshman Orientation program is scheduled for Thursday, August 24th at 8:00am with a program designed for parents beginning at 10:30am.
Student schedules will be available on the Realtime Parent Portal beginning Friday, August 25th at 12:01 am. If you do not know your Parent Portal username and password, please email mprinzi@marsd.org for this information. Be sure to follow the prompts listed to view your son or daughter's schedule. Counselors will be available on Monday, August 28th through Thursday, August 31st to answer scheduling questions.
I look forward to meeting our students on Wednesday, September 6th. If you are transporting your child to school, please utilize the loop in the south parking lot. The driveway in the front of the school is restricted for our school buses. Your anticipated cooperation is appreciated.
I would like to thank you for your continued support as our administration, faculty and staff remain committed to providing your children with a safe and supportive environment that fosters academic achievement along with social and emotional growth. Please mark Tuesday, September 26th on your calendar as we will have our annual Back to School Night from 6:30 pm-9:00 pm. The staff and I look forward to meeting you and sharing our goals and expectations. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns or suggestions.
It is a great day to be a Husky!
Sincerely,
Michele Ruscavage
