Sensation Brain
Sensational Brain.com is a wonderful resource for helping you understand and problem solve issues of self-regulation. Many of my OT students have been interested in the concept of being on:
RED. This means Im feeling sluggish, tired, lazy, sleepy. I use the example of Eyeore from Winnie the Pooh. If we were to compare out bodies to a type vehicle, if Im on red Im like a tractor or a tug boat.
YELLOW. Im feeling like Im in the "Just Right" zone for learning. Focused, calm, friendly, respectful, organized. If Im a vehicle, Im just like Mom's car or minivan. Predictable, safe and getting me where I need to go.
Green. Im feeling hyper, energetic, fidgety, on-the go, wild. If I'm a car Im a Ferrari on a racetrack.
Being aware of our arousal state is helpful. We can do an activity or ask for a break to get us back into the "Just Right" zone that supports our ability to learn and participate in class!
