Alfie Kohn explains how encouragement is more beneficial than praising your child. Instead of saying, "Good Job!" when your child
finally writes his or her full name or a new spelling word, try saying something like, "You worked really hard on learning that, and now you can do it! Wow!" The goal is for your child to internalize the feeling of doing a good job, and feeling proud of his or her accomplishments, and not just sit around waiting to be praised by someone else.
